WHAT FORMER STUDENTS HAVE SAID

"I chose Madrid because I wanted to improve my Spanish in one of the most immersive environments available. The city is absolutely incredible, and I relished the opportunity to explore Spain as well as other areas of Europe. I’d recommend that students who choose to study in Madrid pay a lot attention to the events going on around the city, there’s always some kind of social or cultural occasion taking place. Also don’t be too preoccupied with taking trips outside your host country! Spain is so diverse and rich in culture/history that you’d be silly to not want to explore it all!" - William Baker, Senior International Studies major, Spring 2018 U of A Exchange: Universidad Nebrija, Madrid

"I chose to study Abroad in Salamanca, Spain, so that I could be immersed in the language and experience life as a Spaniard. The laid-back culture taught me to slow down and appreciate every day. I improved my Spanish by making conversation with the Spaniards living in my residence, with my host parents, and with locals in shops and cafes. Overall, I loved experiencing a culture so different from my own! For students considering studying in Spain, I would definitely advise them to weigh the benefits and deficits of the different living situations. I found that living with a host family you have much less privacy and independence than living in a residence. They should also consider what size city to stay in; Salamanca was small and comfortable, whereas Madrid is busy and more difficult to get around!" - Audrey Still, Senior Business Management major, Fall 2018 API in Salamanca, Spain: Universidad de Salamanca, International Studies and Business

"I loved studying abroad in Chile. It was truly a once of a life time experience. I honestly got thrown into Chile. It was not my first option, but I am glad that I ended up going there. I would not change it for a minute.

"I did an internship while abroad in Chile and I worked with kids in the foster care system and also worked with students in the school that had special needs. I learned a lot about the health care and political system there and how it impacts the foster care system, students with special needs, and also their education system.

"My advice is to study the culture more. I was told it was one thing, but it turned out to be another. I ended up really looking out of place my first few days there because I brought the wrong clothing, ha-ha. But also, really dive into their history and their culture when you get there. I was in Santiago which is the capital and Chile itself has so many different cultures that have given influence on its culture. It truly was an amazing experience and you just need to dive in and give it your all." -Allyson Braggs, BS in Public Health Spring 2018, current MS Candidate in Community Health Promotion, Summer 2017 ISA Internship in Santiago, Chile

"I have always loved Latin American culture and knew I wanted to go somewhere in South America. The external program I chose, ISA, had programs I liked in Chile and in Peru. I eventually decided on Chile because it had more course options, and I am so glad that is where I ended up!

"Studying abroad is really hard but really really fun. The first month was a challenge as I got used to standing out in a foreign country. But living in Valparaiso was definitely worth it. I loved living on the coast, and I went to the beach several times a week. Chile is also such a diverse country geographically, so it was amazing to explore desert, mountains, forests, ocean, and city all as a part of the same culture! Chileans are very reserved at first but extremely sweet and fun once they open up. I always had funny stories from interactions with my host family and enjoyed practicing my Spanish.

"If you want to improve your Spanish while studying abroad in Chile, you have to put yourself out there. Chileans are shy and sometimes intimidated by Americans and therefore they won't usually initiate conversation. The girl in my study abroad group who improved in her speaking the most was the one who was always trying to converse with different people, even when it was uncomfortable, and she had so many Chilean friends by the end of the semester. It is scary at first but worth it!
Also, Chile is the coolest place I have ever been! I feel like nobody knows about it, so I recommend checking it out!" - Katrina Kinzel, Senior International Business major, Fall 2018 ISA Veritas in Valparaiso, Chile: Spanish Language & Latin American Studies

WHAT FORMER STUDENTS HAVE SAID
"I decided to work towards studying abroad in Germany due to their reputation in engineering sciences and also a wide range of student opportunities. There is a well established system for integrating students into the workforce, and companies are always looking for more minds to work with, so there are numerous chances for those willing to search for them. The culture shock is definitely something to consider, and it can become all to easy to just befriend other international students (which isn't a bad thing). Making friends with German natives is definitely not impossible, however, and finding a social place will provide ample chances to make new friends!

"For students looking specifically to study in Germany, I recommend pushing their language skills, especially with listening and reading. You'll find that people are generally willing to speak English, but there will be a lot of mail, bills, textbooks, etc. that will only come in German, and it's good not to feel intimidated by that. Also, it can be quite scary at first if you want to order food or just ask for directions and it all comes in German. I definitely had my fair share of "blackout" moments in my first few weeks! As a last piece of advice, I would speak with the faculty ASAP, as they love helping students study abroad!" -Connor Heo, senior German & Mechanical Engineering major, summer 2016 studying German at the Language Institute in Holzkirchen and Academic Year 2017-2018 studying German & Engineering through U of A Exchange: Technische Universitaet Darmstadt.

"I chose to go to Germany because I felt that my first experience abroad should involve quite a bit of culture and history. My host city was Berlin and it seemed like the city's history was never ending. Germany is a beautiful country, but I now know Berlin in the winter is not the same as Munich in the spring. I'm happy I chose Berlin for my first experience abroad because the people were amazing, the cultural experience I had really helped me grow and opened my eyes to how many cultures there are to experience and appreciate. If you're considering Germany, do your research! Know about the city or town you'd be staying in, what is near that area, and most of all while abroad take your time to experience your host town. When I went abroad I thought I'd be spending every minute catching planes and trains to other cities and countries, but in the end I took 2 weekend trips to other countries and I spent the rest of my time (I was there for 4 weeks!) in Berlin and I am so glad that I did!!" -Natalie Miller, senior Human Nutrition & Hospitality Innovation major, January Intersession 2018 studying sociology through AIFS Study Abroad in Berlin.

WHAT FORMER STUDENTS HAVE SAID

“I studied abroad to Costa Rica during the Summer of 2017 through ISA. I took classes at Universidad Veritas for half of the trip and worked at La Hospital San Juan de Dios for the remaining portion. My study abroad experience in Costa Rica was all that I could have wanted and more. Not only did I have a complete immersion experience to enhance my Spanish speaking ability, but I had so many opportunities to explore the perfect combination of mountains and beaches that is Costa Rica, and learn while doing it. I had so many experiences and learning opportunities that were truly unique to Costa Rica, my favorite being that I joined a research lab as an assistant and was able to help with the genetic analysis of sharks, sea turtles, and sting rays. Costa Ricans or Ticos, as they call themselves, truly embody the Pura Vida lifestyle that they are so proud of: friendly, relaxed, and always looking to make the most of everything. Studying abroad in Costa Rica has been a defining experience within my college career, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is considering.” - Lane Justus, senior Spanish & Political Science major, Summer 2017 ISA Service-Learning in San Jose, Costa Rica

“I chose to go to Costa Rica because it is such a small country that you can really get to know the people and places very well in just a short amount of time. I also chose to study here to improve my Spanish skills. The people truly are "the happiest in the world." My host family and also basically everyone I met were so welcoming and helpful and they really just want you to have the best experience possible so they are willing to help in any way. My advice to any student considering Costa Rica is to GO. Go with an open mind and a good attitude and you will experience everything this country and its people have to offer. This was the best decision of my life and I would do it over again without a second thought if I could.” - Mallory Hughes, senior Spanish & Communication major, Fall 2017 USAC Costa Rica: Spanish Language, Ecological, and Latin American Studies in Puntarenas

WHAT FORMER STUDENTS HAVE SAID

“Thailand stood out to me because of how different it is than the United States. In no other place can you see traditional Thai medicine taught in front of an ancient 150 foot long golden statue of the Buddha and an ultra modern luxury shopping center right across the street from one another. We lived in a research station in the jungles of Northeast Thailand that had one of the highest concentrations of venomous snakes in Asia, where researchers from all over the world would come to study the unique life that called that environment home. I loved every part of my study abroad experience and my only advice to potential students is to bring plenty of bug spray and drink lots of water.” - Brady Martin, Animal Science major, Tropical Ecology in Northeast Thailand, Summer 2017

WHAT FORMER STUDENTS HAVE SAID

"My experience in Rome was unforgettable. As much as I love Fayetteville, there was something totally surreal about walking past the Vatican on my way to class every morning. For those considering studying abroad in Italy, I highly recommend it." - Patrick Dougherty, Engineering Economics in Rome, May 2018

"Studying abroad in Florence was an absolute dream. There was lots to do, but the city was small enough that I could walk to class, parks, and restaurants without having to use public transportation. My best advice would be to do good research on the program you are going with and read student reviews, and then trust the process! A lot of the things I stressed about ended up being a non-issue, and I wasted time worrying about them." - Reagan Broach, API in Florence, Italy: Lorenzo de’ Medici – The Italian International Institute, Summer 2017
