Gilman Scholarship Meeting: September 11 The Gilman study abroad scholarship is available for the spring 2014 semester! Come find out more about this great study abroad scholarship for Pell grant students and get tips on perfecting your application!

More info: Eligible applicants are undergraduates who are United States citizens, receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad, and participating in a study abroad program that is no less than 4 weeks. Awards are generally $3,000 for a summer and $5,000 for a semester/year. Applications for spring 2014 must be submitted online by October 1, 2013.
We will be hosting two meetings on Wednesday, September 11 from 4-5pm, and Tuesday October 1st from 4-5pm, all in JBHT 207.  If you’re unable to attend and/or have additional questions, please contact studyabr@uark.edu.

Celebration of International Exchange between Arkansas and Japan: September 18. An outdoor ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. between Ozark Hall and Old Main to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the gift of cherry trees to the U.S.A. from Japan. There will be a panel discussion with Consul General Motohiko Kato at 3:00 p.m. in WJWH 203. Also, enjoy a special display in Mullins Library! 

U.S. State Dept. Info Meeting:  U.S. Embassy Internships and the Critical Language Scholarship Program, September 19. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers fully-funded intensive language institutes in thirteen critical foreign languages for summer 2014 and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.  CLS applications are due November 15.  

The U.S. Department of State Student Experience provides the opportunity to work in U.S. Embassies throughout the world. This unpaid program is designed to provide substantive experiences in a Foreign Affairs environment. Internship applications are due November 1st.  This informational meeting will be presented by the Dept. of State’s Regional Diplomat in Residence, Jean Preston, whose tours have included the U.S. Embassies in Guatemala, Peru, Venezuela, Italy, and Mexico.  Co-presenters include our Office of Study Abroad advisor, Meredith McKee (mmckee@uark.edu), who has participated in two internships (human rights in Washington, D.C. and public affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria), as well as Jim Madril, the Washington-based recruiting and outreach officer for the Arkansas area. 

The Critical Language Scholarship meeting will take place from 3-4 p.m; The U.S. Department of State Internship meeting will take place from 4-5 p.m.  The location of both meetings is still to be determined, so check our calendar next week.
Both undergraduate and graduate students of all majors are welcome and eligible for both opportunities. 

Study Abroad Fair: September 24 Mark your calendars! The annual Study Abroad Fair is going to be held from 10:00am-2:00pm on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 in the International Connections Lounge in the Union. Come meet with faculty, past participants and program representatives. Get information on U of A faculty-led programs, exchange programs and approved external programs, scholarships, and other funding information. Programs are available for all majors.
