South Africa is the southernmost country on the African continent. It is the world’s 25th largest country by area and ranks 24th in terms of population (almost 56 million people). It is bounded by over 1,500 miles of coastline! It has 3 capitals: Pretoria, the executive capital, Bloemfontein, the judicial capital, and Cape Town, the legislative capital. It’s largest city, Johannesburg, while not one of the capital cities, is the seat of the Constitutional Court. South Africa is often referred to as the “Rainbow Nation” due to its multicultural diversity and the fact that it has 11 official languages! In 2006, South Africa became the first African nation to recognize same sex marriage (currently the only African nation to do so). Soccer is very popular in South Africa. It hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African nation to host the event. Popular tourist destinations in South Africa include: Kruger National Park, Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the Hillbrow Tower (which is the tallest tower on the African continent)!
