Interning in Ireland with the #Gilmanscholarship

Allyson Braggs will travel to Ireland for an internship this summer. She is majoring in Communication Disorders: Speech Pathology & Audiology and Public Health.

On February 7th, I got the best news ever and my dream about going to Ireland became a reality. That day while sitting in my room I got the email saying that I am one of the students to receive a Gilman Scholarship. This summer the Gilman Scholarship will be helping me go to Galway, Ireland. In Ireland, I will be participating in an internship where I will be helping a community health group spread health education and information in Galway. We will be working with mostly the youth in the community and then have programs where we will also incorporate the parents with skills to take into the home.

This will help me in my goals after college because I want to be a sexual health educator in middle schools or high schools. I will be implementing the some of the same programs that I use this summer in the classroom with my students. I will be learning the skill set and techniques that will make me a better educator. Along with the trades that I will learn as an educator, but I will learn the customer service and communication skills needed for my field.

For the Gilman, you are required to do a follow up project. My follow up project has multiple parts to it. While in Ireland and wherever I travel, I will be taking pictures and videos of the places I experience. When I come back to the states I will be having a small gallery showing to show my pictures to show that people of color can be artists in their own way. I will also be posting vlogs and different videos of while I am there on a YouTube channel. I will also be submitting blog posts about my experiences there and submitting them to the Black Alumni Association to be in their monthly emails out to everyone in their organization.

Getting the Gilman Scholarship is more than just receiving money to go somewhere cool over the summer. This scholarship means that I can come back from my trip better equipped to go and work in my desired field. I will be able to show my sister and brother that if they work towards anything they want they can achieve it. I can be an image for my community that nothing can hold us back even when it feels like everything is trying to. To me, the Gilman means encouragement and hope. And one day I hope that I can give back to this organization as it has given to me.
