The Adopted Belizean #HogsAbroad in Belize #TBT

July 4, 2016
Happy Fourth of July! Ironically enough I went to the immigration office to get my Belize visa renewed this morning. It was an odd feeling sitting on the steps across the street from the immigration office waiting for the office to open.

I’ve gotten used to sticking out like a sore thumb on the street on an everyday basis. You just smile, wave, and say good day to the people that make funny comments or ask you for money. This was a different feeling entirely. Everyone passing on the street knew that I was sitting there because legally I don’t “belong” in Belize. I had an easy 30-minute process of paying a small fee and getting my passport stamped and Belize was once again “home” for the next month.

That very tiny, miniscule experience of feeling like I don’t belong in a country made my heart go out to the thousands of refugees in the world fighting to find a home. It was good to feel like an adopted “Belizean” again.

P.S. Since I’m late posting these blogs..the picture comes from the Benque Fiesta where we found fireworks!! So it was almost like a late Fourth of July celebration.
