Today, Tenisha told me the story of how she started catering for the University of Arkansas student study abroad trip every year. Hannah (a Peacework Employee) stopped by Tenisha’s house unexpectedly for lunch one day. After tasting Tenisha’s cooking, she asked if Tenisha would prepare a meal for the large group of students.
Tenisha said that she didn’t even make any money the first year that she cooked for the students. She went out and rented pots and pans and dishes from her neighbors because she didn’t have the tools to cater for such a large group. But she did what she had to do in order to start that relationship. And now here she is three years down the road and has been able buy a new stove, renovate her house, supply her own set of pots and pans for her catering business.
It’s amazing what one risky business investment can lead to. You can tell by the way she talks about her life that she is so happy and so proud of what she is doing for her family. Pine and Tenisha kept saying, “You just have to know what you want and then work for it.”
They have the same mentality that my parents have, and have always taught to me. Work for everything you own. Work for everything you are. Work hard because no one can take the pride of a job well done away from you. Good values run deep, all the way from small town Oklahoma to coast side Belize.
