My Place in Spain #HogsAbroad #IEWOurJourney

Andrew, Peer Advisor
Hello all! My name is Andrew Bartels and I studied abroad in Málaga, Spain for an entire year.  Situated on Spain’s southern coast, the Málaga is simultaneously a beach resort and living museum. The Phoenicians founded the city almost 3000 years ago and people have been living there ever since.  Málaga is home to important Spanish writers, jurists, and even Pablo Picasso (the house where he was born is now a museum).  To me, living in Málaga meant being part of a great historical tradition which the present keeps augmenting.

Malagueños are proud of the city’s past, but they are also excited for the city’s future as it continues to grow as a cultural center.

I saw ruins from Phoenicia, Rome, al-Andalus, and the Renaissance all within a square mile in the downtown.  And Málaga, the heir to such a diverse past, not only preserves its traditions but develops them through parks, museums, and a greater consciousness about the city and its history.  Living in Málaga meant getting to be part of the city, both past and present.  I am eager to see the city continue to grow and see its fascinating past have a place in the future.

The University of Arkansas is celebrating International Education Week. The goal this year is to hear from Razorbacks across the globe about their travel & international study experiences.

Want to participate? Just post a photo on social media of yourself abroad- ideally with some text to show where you’re from and where you’ve been- using #IEWOurJourney.
