While studying in Stockholm, our team had the opportunity to live on a houseboat. The rooms were small, but the boat was docked at a location which gave us great access to the city. We were within walking distance of Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s old district, and we were just a short subway ride away from almost anywhere else in the city we wanted to visit. This central location helped us to make the most of our time abroad.
One of the most interesting places we visited while in Stockholm was Stockholm City Hall. The building is comprised of beautiful red brick which makes it stand out from the surrounding buildings. It consists of a number of elegant halls that encircle a courtyard. The courtyard contains a large tower in the south-east corner called the City Hall Tower. We had the opportunity to tour the Blue Hall and Golden Hall as well as scale the City Hall Tower. The view from the top of the tower was amazing. After touring Stockholm City Hall, it was easy to understand why the site is a popular venue for weddings and why it was selected for the annual Nobel Prize Banquet.
Each day we were in Stockholm, we toured at least one museum. We
visited the Nobel Prize Museum, the Abba Museum, and the Vasa Museum along with many others. Viewing
and learning about the various artifacts gave us a better understanding of Swedish history and
culture.
Of all the museums we visited, the Nobel Prize Museum was
definitely my favorite. In the back of the museum, there were hallways which
had videos of former Nobel Prize recipients projected on the walls. Each
recipient conveyed a message on a subject via a three to five minute
presentation. Walking down the hall, it was hard not to feel as if you were
surrounded by the greatest minds of our time.
My stay in Stockholm was certainly a
highlight of my study abroad experience. I was given the opportunity to embrace
a new culture and tour many of the city’s attractions. I would recommend Health
Teams Abroad in Sweden to anyone who is looking to study abroad and is also
interested in a profession in health care.
