University of Arkansas student Mattie Harris received the Boren scholarship to study Arabic in Israel during the 2018-19 academic year. This opportunity has allowed her to expand her understanding of languages and cultures in the Middle East as well as further her career aspirations of working in the federal national security arena.
The Boren Scholarship is an initiative of the National Security Education Program to provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages. Boren scholars will study abroad in over 30-plus countries throughout Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
The most popular languages to study on a Boren award are Arabic, Mandarin, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Swahili, and Korean.
