The FOOD #HogsAbroad in England #FoodieFriday

I’ve never considered myself a picky eater, but there are certain foods I would draw the line on – like olives, Brussels sprouts, or weird animal parts. This past weekend, on a trip to London with my friend who is a local, I ate something that inspired me to make this blog post – jellied eel. When my friend, Van, told me we had to get the jellied eel, I thought it was some British version of gummy worms. I was wrong. It was literally boiled eel put into jell-o (“jelly”) made from the water that the eel was boiled in. Definitely not meant for those with weird food texture issues.

During my time abroad I have taking a liking into foods I used to hate and eaten unknown things that turned out to be delicious! Some of my favorite meals have been completely vegetarian (or “veggie” as they say). I would encourage anyone traveling to eat food that the normally wouldn’t, especially if it is a traditional dish from the country visited.

So here it is: Lots of pictures with descriptions of the food I have eaten!

Butterbeer! The frothy bubbles on top were the best!
Jellied eel on top – slimy and quite sickly if you eat too much
the best veggie meal in Copenhagen
that 2am chips stand always calling your name
You win some, you lose some. Ordering this in a public park in Prague was definitely a joke. We were basically sold hot dogs and bread that tasted like licorice but it is a good laugh now!
Trdelníks in Prague – cooked by rolling over an open fire, coated in butter and dusted with sugar. Very healthy…
really enjoying the sausage in the Czech Republic
It is nice to have one really nice meal in every city you visit. This was a very nice traditional Czech restaurant where I got turkey and Ella got duck. They look like small portions, but we almost couldn’t finish it!
Weekly Sunday dinner at Cambridge. I loved the traditions carried at the university and I’m glad that I could participate in them.
This was a night to remember. Ella and I were starving and wanted the best value for our dollar – which calls for a buffet! To make it worth the cost, we ended up eating nearly 22 entrees together. Beyond stuffed.
Pelicano is one of my favorite coffeehouses in Brighton with great coffee and large cakes to share
5 fancy toasts. 2 girls. No problem. Traditional Danish toasts.
Danishes from a food market in Denmark. Dangerous.
Veggie meal at a local church in Copenhagen – risotto, pesto, and salad – finally getting our greens!
Swedish “sweet buns” one cardamon and one cinnamon
Italian hot chocolate. Literally liquified chocolate with almost a pudding texture.
“American Diner” food according to Helsingborg, Sweden. Very good curry inspired baked potato – questionably American
More veggie meals! If I were a vegetarian I would eat like this everyday. Seriously considering it…
Our fancy dinner night in Sweden – traditional food including melt-in-your-mouth salmon. Always a favorite of mine.
“Apfelstrudel” in Austria
Good effort, Salzburg, but the South does better fried chicken. I also ate a part of a chicken I’ve never tired before. Not sure what it was (possibly the gobbler?) but I don’t want to think about it.
Worldwide Award winning coffee. Won for its modern way of roasting that produces a complex fruity flavor that many do not actually enjoy. I really liked it, but not for the daily routine cup.
Beetroot cream soup! So unique. So colorful. 10/10 would recommend on a cold day. Thank you Salzburg.
Beer hall in Austria – very heavy food – very heavy heart from leaving
Fancy German dinner – sauerkraut, meat and some form of potatoes, of course!
Halloumi burger – a veggie option for a burger made from cheese with such a rubbery texture, I could hear it squeak on my teeth as I chewed. Now I know, I will always prefer a real burger.
When the weather is nice, we picnic outside! Sandwiches, sausage rolls, crisps and fruit! These are the days in Brighton I will miss the most.
I love trying new things on the menu, but this wrap is the only thing I see when I eat at this Middle Eastern wrap shop in the Lanes in Brighton. “Çigköfte”, you have ruined me for all of life’s awaiting pleasures.
First “BBQ” in Brighton on the beach! With nice weather and a portable grill, a (British) BBQ is a must! Not at all related to BBQ in America (I don’t think it even exists outside of the US)
VIP or “Very Italian Pizza” is hands down the best pizza I have ever had. So fresh. So Italian. So many slices eaten.
Hot Chocolate like I’ve never seen before! Chocolate base, hot milk, and chocolate shaving to melt on top. Thank you London.
Goat’s milk ice cream! A favorite of mine since the Goat Festival in Arkansas and much better than normal cow’s milk ice cream. Flavor: Biscuit. Such a British flavor (:
