Our Journey | South Island, NZ
|
During
the fall semester in New Zealand, every university student gets a 10-week
“mid-semester break,” and of course, I saw it as my opportunity to explore the
beauty of the South Island.
Due to the
fact that I’m very cheap, I decided that the best way to explore was to load 5
people into a small sedan and drive for nine days, and I quickly realized that
5 people should never be put into a small car for that long!
Regardless of how uncomfortable the car ride
might have been at times, it was a life-changing experience, and it gave us the
opportunity to get to know each other very well.
Every night, we would find a new
campsite and sleep there, and during the day, we would discover new things to
see and do.
That trip was full of a lot
of firsts for me.
It was the first time
I had ever kayaked next to a dolphin; It was the first time I had ever truly
seen the stars shine at night; It was the first time I had ever interacted with
seal pups in their natural habitat; and It was the first time that I ever had
to think about where I was going to lay my head at night.
I was introduced to nature in a completely
new way, and it changed my perspective in so many ways.
The earth has so much beauty to offer, and we
decide how we will experience it.
