5 Questions for Holly Hamblen, Spring 2017 #Gilman Scholarship Recipient #HogsAbroad

Holly Hamblen was awarded a Gilman scholarship to support her
teaching internship in Sweden this spring.
What will you be doing in the spring academically/on your program and what do you think made you a good Gilman candidate?
I will be student teaching in a high school. I believe it is my hardworking, never give up attitude. I am also a non-traditional student, in the fact that I am 29 years old.

What was the application process like?
The application process was not hard, but it was easy either. I had a lot of help and support from family, friends and my professor, Angela LaPorte.

What will your follow-up project be about?
For my follow-up, I will be coming back to the University and talking about my trip and experience in Professor LaPorte’s classes and I have offered to come back for abroad meetings as well.

What tips would you give to others considering applying?
Apply whether or not you think you will get it or not, or need it or not. It is always helpful. Just be yourself in your letters for the application and get professors that you trust to help you. Take your time and get it done early, don't wait because if you are like me you will overload yourself with things to do and stress out, don't do that. Get it in early and just sit back and relax while waiting to hear back. Also, while you are waiting to hear back, try not to think about it too much and freak yourself out.

Anything else you want to add?
Nothing feels better than being honored with a grant, it truly has made me feel so blessed and thankful.
