Gearing up for Belize

Hi!  My name is Sara. I am a Biology pre-med student here at the University of Arkansas. I am a member of the Public Health group participating in the Community Development Belize Program.

I will start my first entry by talking about our pre-departure classes. We are required to attend for days of classes prior to departure for the attending faculty to go over their projects as well as prepare us for culture shock. Thus far we have heard presentations from the faculty of the Public Health, Engineering, Ecology, Business, and Literacy groups.

I am going to try to come up with advice for students considering studying abroad in Belize with each entry. The advice for today is to be prepared to allot at least 1/4 of your check-on luggage to products that each group is having to bring down to Belize. I am having to take some of the Business team's soccer jerseys as well as the Public Health team's stethoscopes and medical books. As being a community development project, we all have the obligation to sacrifice a little for the good of the community. That is the whole point of the project.

OK, well that is all the time I have to today. I will write again on departure day!
