1) English Camp
August 6th marked the day of Ban Bowin Olympics: English Camp 2016. Biew and I worked together to create a fun day for our Mattayom 1-3 students. Four wonderful Fulbrighters came to Bowin to help. The students were split into teams representing different countries. Throughout the day they rotated to different stations collecting stamps in their country passport. Biew helped them create team cheers. Christine led beachball relays to practice creating sentences based on occupations. Danielle taught about world currencies bringing in her own collection. Meg taught about countries and flags by playing spoons with a deck of cards she created. Jacob taught them how to make PB&J sandwiches with a song and hands on PB&J creating experience. I led the dance section and we cupid shuffled all day long. We closed out the day with the students performing their country cheers. Overall it was a huge success!2) Bach Aria Soloists
Kansas City’s own Bach Aria Soloists were
in Bangkok for a festival in late July. Thanks to the embassy they got
connected with me and planned a visit to my school. My students loved
listening, clapping and dancing along to their music. This was an incredible
opportunity for my students to be introduced to live chamber music as
well as practice their English. To show their appreciation my students
cheered the “Let’s Go Royals” chant and they were wonderfully surprised.
Many thanks to the Bach Aria Soloists and the US Embassy in Bangkok!
3) Visiting Ferang Friends
4) Oh ya…Class
Mattayom is knee deep in their Olympics
unit. We’ve been watching highlights, keeping a close eye on the medal
count and decoding messages to learn more about the games. My favorite
activity so far has been the Olympic scavenger hunt. The students had to
decode clues and then figure out where
on campus the clues led them. Once they reached each destination they
had to decode another message to fill in the blanks of Olympic fun
facts. They were super excited and got very competitive….mission
accomplished!
Pratom just finished a unit on action
words and using “to be” to create sentences. By the end they were
putting together the chart with the English word + Thai word + picture
and then putting them into sentences using He is, She is, They are, etc.
I spent hours creating this game which took them less than 10 minutes
to complete. I underestimated their brilliance thinking it would take
the longer but yet, mission accomplished and a pleasant surprise that
they knew it so well Last week we practiced talking about our favorite
things by making conversation cootie catchers.
In other new…
- For Buddhist lent we had a five day weekend and 10 Fulbrighters headed to Ubon to celebrate at the candle festival. We visited the festival, made wax candles ourselves and played lots of card games (which is illegal in Thailand, rebels I know). It was a great opportunity to spend time together and crazy to think that the next time that many of us will be in one place will be the end.
- This past weekend was Mother’s Day so we had a big celebration at school and luckily had a three day weekend. Fellow Razorback and Fulbrighter Jacob and I started our scuba certification in Rayong. Our instructor, Yot, is awesome and made the process less terrifying and fun! We will head back in two weeks to finish our last two dives. Cheers to conquering fears and discovering new hobbies!
- Christine and I had a rockin weekend celebration on Koh Sichang to celebrate my 23rd birthday. We chilled on the beach, read by the pool, ate Italian food and stayed up way past our bedtime watching the Lizzie McGuire movie. Shout out to Christine, the other half of #Chonburigirls, for making it a memorable weekend!
- A few weeks ago a few of us Fulbrighters headed to Phitonulok to help with English camp then spent the weekend hanging around town. Friday night we celebrated the 4th of July by grilling out and listening to country music. The next day we headed to Phetchabun to explore Wat Pha Sorn Kaew. This is by far my favorite temple in Thailand thus far! It’s intricately designed with pieces of glass and colorful dishes.
