Pursue Study Abroad with the Gilman Scholarship

The Importance of Cross-Cultural Understanding Through the Gilman Scholarship

My journey of cultural exploration took me to Paris, France, where I discovered the profound significance of cross-cultural understanding through the support of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Cultural Immersion Experience with the Gilman Scholarship

I'm so excited to share my adventures in Paris, France, where I spent ten months studying abroad. The Gilman Scholarship funds students from underrepresented backgrounds to study abroad. It encourages students to engage in cultural immersion activities beyond the classroom and enhance their understanding of the host culture. I wanted to interact with the locals, learn about their customs and values, and see how they live their daily lives.

While abroad, I took Advanced French and practiced the language in and out of class with native friends and family. I noticed a drastic change in my ability to speak and comprehend French. Being exposed to the language daily has encouraged me to read everything I see, whether it's on a building, billboard, restaurant, or metro sign. This program has allowed me to expand my cultural perspective of France through our excursions to different regions of the country. We went on tours with local guides in French to learn about history, culture, and traditions, which has broadened my global understanding. Taking tours in French enabled me to become more proficient in my listening skills. When I hear people speak, I can actively process and comprehend without translating the meaning in my head. Each week, I visited my great aunt Renée, a native French speaker, to practice speaking and listening. I learned to correctly use masculine and feminine words and proper pronunciation through her corrections. After one month, I have noticed an increase in my ability to speak French, but I am still far from perfect. I believe it is essential for me to stay for another semester, as becoming fluent in French will significantly increase my marketability in the European job market.

I immersed myself in French culture by exploring the city as much as possible. Paris is a vast and diverse city with many things to see and do. I visited famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and the outside of the Notre Dame Cathedral. I also ventured into less-known areas like Belleville and Canal Saint-Martin. I discovered hidden gems like cozy cafes, charming bookstores, and colorful street art. I also enjoyed walking along the Seine River, riding the metro, and browsing the markets.

Exploring Paris taught me much about its history, politics, and society. I saw how Parisians celebrate national holidays like Armistice Day. I witnessed how they expressed their opinions and protested injustice. I also noticed how they embrace diversity and multiculturalism through cuisine, music, and fashion.

Through these experiences, I gained a deeper understanding of French culture and its similarities and differences with my own culture. I realized that culture is not static or monolithic but dynamic and complex. I also realized that cultural immersion is more than passive or superficial; it is active and meaningful. It requires curiosity, openness, and respect.

Studying abroad in Paris was one of the best decisions of my life. It was not only an academic opportunity but also a personal growth opportunity. It challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, broaden my horizons, and discover new aspects of myself. It also enriched me with unforgettable memories, valuable skills, and lifelong friendships. My Study Abroad Destination with the Gilman Scholarship

The first step in my study abroad journey was determining my criteria for selecting a destination. I wanted a place that offered a rich cultural experience, a strong academic program in my field of study, and the opportunity to improve my French language skills. Paris immediately came to mind. It's known for its world-renowned art, history, and cuisine, making it an ideal destination for someone seeking cultural immersion.

Next, I started researching universities and programs in Paris that aligned with my academic and personal goals. Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine. I knew immersing myself in a foreign culture, advancing in a language, and gaining a global perspective would be life-changing. However, the financial aspect of studying abroad often seemed like a formidable barrier. That was until I discovered the Gilman Scholarship, a program that made my dream of studying in Paris, France, a reality.

While scrolling through study abroad resources, I stumbled upon the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship, generously funded by the U.S. Department of State, extends financial support to undergraduate students who received the Federal Pell Grant in the past year or currently do and aspire to study abroad. The Courage Not to be Unique

Kati Rod is an honors agricultural business and international business student from Kennedale, Texas. With an Honors College Study Abroad Grant, Rod recently finished a semester abroad in Rome, Italy with the University of Arkansas Rome Center. While in Rome, she was invited to visit a social cooperative, a Cooperativa Al di là dei Sogni, as a class and weekend excursion. Rod had the opportunity to volunteer at the cooperative, interview the owner and spend a few unforgettable days with the employees. The Cooperativa Al di là dei Sogni is a social cooperative in Sessa Arunca, Italy. Rather than focusing on selling a product, it is centered on creating a space for its employees. Its mission to support people makes it unique, but being unique is the last thing that founder Simmaco Perillo wants. He dreams of his business model being replicated around the world.

Simmaco and his wife Paula have built a place where people are central, and second chances are standard. His goal was to “provide jobs to people to give a different kind of shine.” The Cooperative employs those with mental disabilities, criminal records, and current inmates who have the opportunity for work placements. Additionally, the Cooperative sits on a piece of property that was once an asset to the local mafia group, the Camorra.

A Place Beyond Dreams

The goat on the right was a newborn the first time I went to Al di là dei Sogni. By the time I went back, he was twice the size and thriving all on his own!

I learned about Al di là dei Sogni in my Global Changemakers class at the University of Arkansas’ Rome Center this semester. We originally took a class trip to visit the cooperative along with several other repurposed mafia lands in the area. During this time, I spoke to one of their volunteers, Giulio, and he told me how the cooperative had impacted his life and gave me some insight into the company’s mission. Once back in Rome, I decided I wanted to go back to learn more about the company and how it achieves its unique goals. I spoke to my professor about it, and she created a project for me to complete and set up my experience at Al di là dei Sogni. With her help, I was able to spend two days staying and volunteering at the cooperative.

The name of the Cooperative reflects its mission as “al di là dei sogni,” or “beyond dreams.” During our conversation, I asked Simmaco what gave him the courage to create a place beyond what he alone could imagine. He told me that the word “courage” in Latin means “heart.” So, to do anything “with courage,” really means to do it “with heart.” Therefore, when you learn how to do things with passion, you already have courage. This means that everyone who is doing something that they are passionate about, is living life with courage. Simmaco added that everyone can relate to the feeling you get when you help someone. Why not make it his job?

Erasmus picked lettuce for our dinner on Friday night and never failed to wave at me on the opposite end of the table.

Al di là dei Sogni currently employs about forty people on and off the farm. When the business first started, Simmaco relied on social services and the national health care system in his search for employees. However, as his business grew, his mission spread and soon people came to him. Here is where the Cooperative excels in building the business around its people. There is no set number of positions or designated roles. Rather, as people come, a space is created for them.

The Cooperative itself offers a hostel, restaurant, and several products that are made on the property. Additionally, they host school groups, trainings, retreats, and other events. They also sell boxes called Pacco alla Camorra (Package to the Camorra), that are collections of products made at the Cooperative and their partner operations. The names on the boxes honor and spread awareness about their mission of repurposing land that was once used by the Camorra.

“Via la mafia” here is ironic becuase “via” in italian means street. This street that once used to be used as a mafia asset is now a means used to kick them out and demonstrate community support against the Camorra.

The Cooperativa Al di là dei Sogni has become successful because of its deep respect for people, its desire to overcome mafia history, and the value of the relationships that it has created. Moving forward, Simmaco’s hope is that the Cooperative would not be praised for its uniqueness, but rather become one of many replications around the world. He hopes that similar places will be created to serve all people, everywhere.

“You Need to Start to Dream Again”

“You need to start to dream again” was Simmaco’s answer when I asked him if he had any advice for young people who want to make a difference but are not sure how to start. This had been a recurring theme in my life recently, and when Simmaco said that I could feel the weight of conviction in my chest as the air left my lungs. Dreams and community have echoed their way through my semester and my experience at Al di là dei Sogni was no different.

“You need to start to dream again.” As Simmaco put it, dreaming is not about taking in the beauty of the sky, but about believing in yourself. Dreaming is doing everything with passion, with courage, and with intentionality.

“You need to start to dream again, but you have not to dream alone.”

This was the second half of Simmaco’s advice. He told me that when you share your dream it’s going to be real because it is going to become part of your community. If not, it’s just you alone.

Building Community Without Words

Gaetano fixed my broken door that was not actually broken, and instead taught me how my door worked on my second day at The Cooperative.

I saw this principle put into practice while staying at Al di là dei Sogni. From the way that everyone had a seat at the table no matter how small that table was. Seriously, there were eight of us sitting around a table the size of an extra-large pizza one afternoon. I heard it in every desperate attempt at a conversation with the American girl who came to Italy knowing zero Italian. I felt it when my heart sank saying goodbye to people that I had met only forty-eight hours earlier.

While I was at Al di là dei Sogni, I made the coolest connections with people I could barely speak to. I love talking to strangers. In restaurants, on the street, in the airport–I love hearing their stories and perspectives. That is one of the things that I have missed most while being in Italy because I do not speak Italian. The most heart-breaking feeling I have come across this semester is the genuine look on someone’s face when they are trying to make you understand but you cannot comprehend their words. However, I have also been able to find an amazing beauty in the effort that overcomes language barriers. I have been truly humbled this semester by the amount of hand motions and chunky sentences that were used to communicate, and it was no different at Al di là dei Sogni.

Antonio wears a red coat and chef’s hat when in the kitchen, and I have never seen a more perfect icon of a chef.

However, the few employees at Al di là dei Sogni who spoke English made sure that I was taken care of during my stay. Monica took care of my schedule and always made sure that I had everything I needed. Besides making one of my favorite meals in Italy, Antonio, the chef at Al di là dei Sogni, spoke English and was happy to make conversation with me every time our paths crossed. The first night I arrived, he introduced himself and shared his story of learning English in London and how he ended up working at Al di là dei Sogni. At the end of our conversation, Antonio said something that I think is applicable everywhere you go: “we all have our problems, but we all have big hearts.” That is the mission of Al di là dei Sogni and I believe it is a good summation of what community looks like worldwide.

Errands and Ice Cream

The next morning, I started work at 8:30. I had no idea what that entailed, all I knew was that I was going to the factory. As we walked in, Monica handed me a hair net, a plastic apron, and booties to cover my shoes. She introduced me to Anna, a short blonde woman with a sweet smile who took care of me all day. She instructed me to cut strawberries, taught me how to properly peel the skins of lemons, and made sure I had a front row seat to how everything worked inside the factory. This is also where I got to know Francesco, a father and the one in charge of operating the big machine that cooks the jam at the factory.

Later in the afternoon when all the work was done, in true “dad fashion,” Francesco asked me if I wanted to take a trip into town for gelato with him and Mino, another man I met the night before. I am never one to say no to ice cream of any kind, so of course I said yes. An hour later, the men came rolling up in style with the windows down, sunglasses up, and music blaring. I knew I was in for an adventure. Even though I do not speak Italian and they did not speak much English, it was one of my favorite adventures in Italy. It was on this trip that I began to understand why Italians are so keen on talking with their hands: it really does help get the message across. After taking care of the pickups and returns at the mall we went in search of the gelato shop. Once we found it, Francesco did not like the look of the gelato that was at that stand so Mino led us down the road near the seaside to a place that he loved. He was right, it was some of the best gelato I had in Italy and the view of the sea was incredible.

When we got back to the Cooperative, the number of tables in the dining room had doubled from the night before and the patio outside was buzzing with people all around. That was the night that I met Lauradonna, Vincenzo, Erasmus, and so many others. I loved that dinner not only because it was just as good as the last, but because of the people who I was able to eat with. Conversation on my side of the table was limited because of the difference in language, but many smiles were shared, and I loved every second of it.

Sharing Our Stories
During day two at Al di là dei Sogni I planted onions and beans with a man named Daniele. Daniele is from Columbia originally and his first language is Spanish. I know some Spanish so that is how we communicated while we dug holes and placed seeds. While we worked, he told me about his life, his family, and how he ended up in Italy. Daniele’s story is one I will not forget. The joy he displayed in his work was inspiring and his guidance was thoughtful.

My day with Anna in the factory. Anna and I did not speak the same language, so she spent a lot of the morning demonstrating how to do things properly. I felt proud and encouraged as the whole factory celebrated as I caught on.

During this time, the high school group that was visiting for the day learning about the mafia came to join us in the field. They helped us plant and I got to speak with one of the girls who told me this was their last stop on a tour of seized mafia lands. Seeing them learning reminded me of all the things that I have learned this semester and all the things that I was still learning as I dropped seeds into the ground that day.

It also struck me that those students did not know Daniele’s story the way that I did. They were there to learn about the mafia while my goals related more toward business and community. Working and actively participating at Al di là dei Sogni gave me a new perspective of what a business model can look like and has inspired me to act in my own communities when I get home.

In forty-eight hours, I made jam, rode into town for errands and gelato, planted onions and beans, and made friends whose stories and smiles are still at the forefront of my mind. In forty-eight hours, I witnessed a dream go way beyond a business that had absolutely nothing to do with selling. In forty-eight hours, I learned what it means to have courage, and what it looks like to humble yourself and dream with the courage to not be unique.

Community and Connections #HogsAbroad in Spain

Hi everyone! My name is Allison Primm and I am a rising Junior. I am studying International Business Marketing and Political Science. This summer I am studying abroad in Madrid, Spain! I am studying through an external program called CEA at La Universidad Antonio de Nebrija. At Nebrija I am taking classes in both Spanish and English. During the June term I took both Panorama of Spanish Literature and International Management. This month in the July term I am taking Advanced Spanish and International Marketing. My experience at Nebrija has been amazing and I absolutely love my classes and my teachers. One thing that has been particularly encouraging to me has been the understanding attitudes of my teachers. Though I have only been here a relatively short time, I have been able to develop close personal relationships with each of my instructors. All of them have shown me immense kindness and genuinely want me to succeed. They focus on creating positive learning environments in the classroom and they encourage participation and campus community through their teaching styles. This approach has helped me become more confident in not only my Spanish abilities, but also my interpersonal skills among my peers.

Before I arrived in Spain, I took a 2-part placement exam to help me enroll in the right courses at Nebrija. I would say that this exam was one of the biggest stress factors for me leading up to my arrival, however looking back, it shouldn’t have been. The teachers and advisors at Nebrija are all so helpful and kind. I was nervous for my speaking interview, but I relaxed so much once it began, and I realized that there was no judgement, and they were only there to help me. One of the biggest things I would recommend doing to prepare for a language placement exam is to practice speaking the language with a friend beforehand to get more comfortable with responding to questions on the spot. I would also recommend listening to Spanish music or podcasts or watching Spanish movies and TV shows so that you can get used to hearing the language. When I got here, one big adjustment that I had not anticipated was just the extra effort my brain was using towards listening to and translating the conversations I heard on the street or the announcements on the metro. Giving yourself time to practice listening to Spanish in your daily life will definitely help your transition.

Life in Madrid is different from life in Fayetteville of course, but the adjustment to a more urban setting was very easy for me. One huge help is the metro system in Madrid. The metro runs all around the city and can take you anywhere you need to go. It is very simple, clean, and safe. Within the first two days of living in Spain, I was navigating the metro and the city like a local! I was shocked by how easily I settled in to daily life once I got here. This is in huge part to the incredible kindness of the Spanish people. An integral part of Spanish culture is the focus on friendship and community. There were times where I was lost or confused and a total stranger came up to me and offered their help. This was surprising to me, as in many cultures, people tend to keep to themselves, but in Spain, it has been the people that I know the least who have helped me through some confusing times.

Another thing that helped ease my adjustment period was that I was connected with people in my program from the beginning, and I have roommates in the apartment I live in. This was crucial to navigating the first few weeks as I had people who could easily relate to me and go with me through the uncertainties. If you are interested in participating in a study abroad experience, I would encourage you to try and meet as many new people as you can. It may surprise you how much you have in common with people you never knew before. I am very thankful for this time I have spent abroad, and I look forward to keeping in touch with my new friends when we all return home!

A Life Changing Experience: Getting an Internship in Virtual Spain #MondayMotivation

Objective 1
At the beginning of the semester I gave myself three learning objectives and created a plan that I would implement in order to meet these objectives. My first objective was to be able to apply business concepts and theories to real-world decision-making. My action plan included the use of different tasks and assignments to better and amplify my business concepts and keeping a journal, as I acquired new business concepts and theories, so that I can use them later on in my professional life. I think that being part of this virtual internship really exposed me to new ways to make important decisions regarding a real company, and it will serve for me as a learning and hands-on experience to be able to apply it to upcoming life events. I was able to acquire a plethora of marketing terminology and business terms by engaging with my supervisors and utilizing these terms frequently to refer to my tasks and assignments. My supervisors urged me to use the correct terminology when presenting my ideas and projects to them, and I realize that this allowed me to become familiar and comfortable with using business concepts in a real-world. After constantly utilizing these business concepts around my supervisors I can confidently say that I can use this terminology when needed in my professional and any real-world decision-making setting.

Objective 2
My second objective was to be able to give a full presentation or create a project fully in Spanish. My action plan included keeping a document with all the new Spanish words that I learned throughout my internship and then applying that vocabulary to my projects and presentation. Although, it was a bit difficult to get used to at first this experience was so great because I was able to engage in not only conversation but utilize professional terminology in Spanish as well. I truly believe that being able to receive feedback in Spanish helped me better my overall use of the language, and it also introduced me to a setting where my native language was used professionally. The experience of being able to express myself in both languages was so wonderful and being able to incorporate my first language in the business world is something that I have always looked forward to. Expressing my ideas and presenting them in Spanish was like a dream come true, and it is something

 

Objective 3
My third objective was to acquire more cultural knowledge about Spain and its traditions. It was so incredible to have been able to experience a whole country virtually. It was certainly a different experience, but I also feel like this was a great way to get a grasp about Spain and its people and traditions. The opportunity of being part of the weekly cultural debrief sessions was such a great experience, and I believe that this gave me a closer look about Spain and its culture by talking to Spaniards and asking them questions pertaining to their culture, custom and beliefs, Being able to listen to their cultural experiences an learning about their background opened my eyes to what culture in Spain is really like. I believe that working closely with Buddy Service, which is located in Spain permitted me to learn about its culture and customs through the people that interacted with virtually. I firmly believe that learning about different cultures is super important, and I am so grateful that I got to do this from the commodity of my home.

A Life Changing Experience
I think that we often times oversee that hardships that people with disabilities experience while traveling. Traveling is something that is already so stressful, and through this assignment I learned that people with disabilities don’t receive enough attention or help when traveling. I believe that this assignment is what truly made me fall in love with Buddy Service and what it stands for. I realize that writing reports doesn’t exactly have to do with digital marketing at all but at the same time this is the of the message that I was assigned to get across. After reading various articles about how inaccessible traveling is for disabled people, I decided to always try my best in all of my assignments to help make a difference. I became super passionate and involved in making infographics and creating the best social media posts in an effort to create awareness for disabled travelers. I think that this is an important topic that should be highlighted everywhere. I realized that I wanted more than getting an internship experience, I wanted to help Buddy Service promote their services, so that travelers with disabilities can receive the attention and care that they deserve. This experience made me realize that the goal behind Fabian’s vision was so beautiful, and I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to help make it a reality.

I take immense pride in being a Latina woman pursuing a career in the business world. I aspire to inspire those around me, specifically young first-generation Latinas that are setting their sight on pursuing a higher education. I firmly believe that if I acquire the privilege of succeeding in the business world as a minority, I will be able to help those around me achieve their goals and dreams. I am truly passionate about bettering myself in all aspects, so that I can help those in need in the near future. I am excited to embark in my life journey and inspire other young girls that might feel lost or afraid because I was once just like them. Serving as an inspiration, life mentor and friend is something that I care about with all of my heart and soul, and I believe that my supervisors inspired me to make this a priority. I am learning to better and become the best version of myself each day so that I can make a positive and everlasting impact on those around me. Being part of the Buddy Service team touched my heart and it made me think in a more profound way. This overall experience made me realize that it is important to help others and that being passionate in your goals is important in order to be able and assist others in the future.

What is Buddy Service?

Buddy Service is a travel cycle management for travelers who experience disabilities. The concept is based on four principles that create a pertinent service for specific needs. The four concepts are: enable, encourage, engage, and ensure. Buddy Service offers three types of on-site services: individual care, technical care and activity care. What made me fall in love with this company was the passion that everyone expresses for advocating and spreading awareness of making traveling accessible for people with disabilities. These concepts, on-site services and passion for making the world more diverse and inclusive are what make Buddy Service stand out from other traveling cycle management providers.

Passion for Digital Marketing

I had such an amazing experience working for Buddy Service under the supervision, guidance and help of both Fabian and Añiol. I truly feel like I learned and acquired so much knowledge pertaining to my career goals through the duration of this eight-week long internship. I believe that this experience will allow me to reach my career goals because of the experience and knowledge that I acquired through the various assignments that I completed. I realized that digital marketing is something that I genuinely enjoy doing, and I definitely want to make this my career path. I have only great things to say about Buddy Service and the genuine people behind it. I feel so thankful for the opportunity of working alongside the genuine and resourceful people who created this service for people with disabilities, a group often times overseen by diversity and inclusion enforcers. Being able to work alongside the Buddy Service team was an experience that changed my life forever.

A closer look into my day as an intern for Buddy Service

My role with Buddy Service was “Digital Marketing Manager.” I was under the supervision of Fabian Kraemer, the CEO of Buddy Service and also Añiol Carreras, the digital product expert. My internship consisted of me trying to expose Buddy Service through social media and showcase their services and what they stand for. I was assigned many tasks and assignments that pertained to digital marketing and even entrepreneurship. One of my biggest, and perhaps most important assignment was to create a new Instagram page for Buddy Service. My goal was to create meaningful brand awareness through social media engagement by creating meaningful posts and infographics, I found myself working at least thirty hours a week on creating infographics, making Instagram posts, generating the perfect captions, reading and doing research about accessible tourism, and finding the perfect hashtags to help promote Buddy Service.

Meet One of Our Study Abroad Peer Advisors: Meg Feeley

Hi! I’m Meg Feeley, a junior at the University of Arkansas. I am studying International Business with a minor in Spanish. I was able to study abroad in the summer of 2019 through USAC in Bilbao, Spain.

While I was in Spain, I got to explore the city and meet people from all over the world. I chose to do a homestay and because of that I learned about the life and the traditions of someone completely opposite of me (and got to live with the sweetest dog ever!). I ate authentic food, spent time with wonderful people who had lived in Bilbao all their lives, and practiced my Spanish everday.

Not only did I visit spots in my city that normal tourists wouldn’t normally go, but I was also able to travel to other countries, such as France and England, and my favorite trip was to San Juan De Gaztelugatxe -- otherwise known as Dragonstone from Game of Thrones.

4 Things #HogsAbroad in Chile

Hi! My name is Katrina Kinzel and I am studying International Business and Spanish. Last semester, I studied abroad in Valparaiso, Chile. I went through an external program called ISA and I lived with a host family. I took classes with Chileans and got to travel throughout the country! It was a great experience, and I want to share 4 things I wish I would have known before studying abroad.

1. How much money I was going to spend. I went in with the naïve expectation that I would not spend very much money at all. I thought that $500 would be sufficient spending money for the course of the semester. I was very wrong! I spent a lot more than $500, but it was worth it! With the cost of daily public transportation, extra food and snacks, toiletries, and, of course, travelling, it is easy to spend over $1000 on everything. I had friends that took multiple out of country trips and must have spent a couple thousand dollars during their time abroad. At first, spending money stressed me out and I tried to avoid purchasing things at all costs. But then I made the decision to enjoy my time there and though I spent more money than I had planned, every penny was worth it. 
2. How hard it is to make friends with locals. This was also something I was not expecting! During orientation, they encouraged us to leave the gringo bubble and put ourselves out there, but I didn’t realize how challenging that would be. It definitely depends on the culture, but in my experience it was hard to make friends with Chileans. They are initially shy and closed-off, and have sometimes negative view of Americans. I am also shy when meeting new people and found it hard to leave my safe bubble of Americans to interact with the locals. However, I was able to make friends eventually and it was worth the initial discomfort! 
3. Challenges of living with a host family. Living with a host family was one of the things I was most excited about. And it was really fun! But it was also challenging. Not having control of what or when I ate, lack of privacy, and cultural differences sometimes made me feel awkward and uncomfortable. I loved getting to know my host family and interacting with them, but there were definitely moments when I was very excited to come back home and have more control over my life. 
4. It is still normal life! This is something a lot of my fellow study abroad students struggled with. It was easy to start thinking that, since we were abroad, we needed to be doing cool things at all times or we were wasting our time there. But that is not realistic! There were a lot of times where I hung out in my room, or I was bored, or I had to work on homework, or where I just read or watched a movie. It is important to remember that life is still life, even in a foreign country, and it is important to rest and practice self-care. 

Though learning these things was challenging, it didn’t detract at all from my study abroad experience and I have no regrets in going! It was such an amazing opportunity and I wouldn’t change any of it.
