How India led to Internships for One #HogsAbroad Engineering Student

Hey everyone! My name's Gabby Compton, I'm a senior in Biomedical Engineering also a peer advisor for the Office of Study Abroad. As I’m coming up on my graduation, I’ve been thinking about all the great experiences I’ve been able to have during my time here at the U of A.

I had the wonderful opportunity to study abroad in India summer after my freshman year, and it most certainly has been one of the best experiences of my life. I participated in the Global India Faculty-Led program the summer after my freshman year, where I spent 6 weeks studying engineering globalization and innovation along with Indian culture. Six weeks might not seem very long, but it was my first time out of the country, and India is a place that has a lasting impression.

I loved my time there, even the school part! And the globalization class I took there has been beneficial to me, even years later. Learning how engineering companies operate around the globe has particularly helped in my understanding of corporations and in looking for future employment. But aside from the coursework, I also learned a lot about myself and grew as a person. Because of my experience, I am more outgoing and understanding, and an overall better rounded individual.

Studying abroad was such a wonderful experience that has opened many doors for me. My study abroad in India is the reason I have been able to work as a peer advisor! I really love being to help others to study abroad, and have the same sort of amazing experience that I have had. My experiences have also helped me stand out on applications for jobs, internships, and research positions. At every job fair and interview I have been to, potential employers always take note of my international experience and seem excited to ask me about it. I have been lucky enough to have had an internship with the USDA in DC, and even do summer research at Harvard. Looking back, I firmly believe my experience in India has been the reason I have made it to where I am today, and will help me to continue my success in the future.
