Christmas Magic in Málaga #HogsAbroad in Spain

Since we are approaching the holiday season, I figured it would be a good time to talk about the Christmas lights in the city where I studied abroad, Málaga, Spain.  The light display along its main street has a well-deserved reputation for being one of Europe’s most elaborate and preparation begins weeks before the decorations are finally lit.  The end result is a vault of light in the city’s historic center.

Starting to get decorations in place.  Winter 2015.
The first step is to set up hook-shaped poles, which, at their peak, are about one-and-a-half times the height of a street lamp here in Fayetteville.  The poles make an arch which is then lined with strands of lights, as you can see in the photos above.

After the light strands go up, more decorations are added, such as the yellow stars.  These decorations, and others like them, add a lot of color to the display.  The light strands have only white light, but the additional decorations are of many colors and they are usually in neat designs.

After getting everything in place, the inaugural lighting comes and it is a big deal.  The street is filled with people and once the lights come on the crowd lets out a collective “Ooooh!”.  The decorations are powered down during the day, but every evening when they are re-lit there is always a big crowd taking pictures and enjoying the spectacle.

The lights stay up until mid-January and locals and visitors alike are sad to see them go.  They add a festive air to the city and are a wonderful way to celebrate the season.
