The Cleveland C. Burton Awards are made possible by the generous philanthropy of the Honorable Cleveland C. Burton of Shreveport, Louisiana. In 2008, his niece and executor of his estate, Julia Peck Mobley of Texarkana, Texas, created the Cleveland C. Burton Professorship in International Programs to enhance Fulbright College study abroad opportunities and to promote the legacy of Senator Fulbright. Dean Bill Schwab named Dr. Benjamin Grob-Fitzgibbon the inaugural holder of the professorship in September 2009, and since that time the professorship has offered two awards.

Cleveland C. Burton Undergraduate Fellowship in International Studies were awarded to the following students:
Samantha
Vaughn
Samantha
Vaughn is an honors student triple-majoring in International Relations,
Political Science, and French, with minors in Arabic, Chinese, and Middle
Eastern Studies. Carrying a 4.0 GPA in her rigorous coursework thus far, Ms.
Vaughn will use her Burton Fellowship in the Spring Semester 2013 to travel to
Meknes, Morocco, where she will participate in the Language, Culture, and
Society Program offered through International Study Abroad.
Kelly
Ward
Kelly
Ward is a double-major in Spanish and Communication Disorders, who aims to use
the skills she is developing at the University of Arkansas to become a Speech
Language Pathologist where she can assist those in both the English and Spanish
speaking communities. Ms. Ward will use her Burton Fellowship in the Spring
Semester 2013 to travel to Puntarenas, Costa Rica, through the University
Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) to undertake a program of total immersion in
the Spanish language.

The
Cleveland C. Burton Undergraduate Fellowship in International Studies provides
a fellowship of $4000 each to two students every year, to be used to defray
program fees, tuition, and travel costs associated with study abroad.
Contingent upon successful applications, at least one of these fellowships will
be granted for study abroad in a non-European country and at least one will be
granted to a non-honors student. The Fellowship application comes available
each year on or around October 1, for study abroad programs the following
calendar year (January-December). Selected Fellows must be a Fulbright College
student, with sophomore standing of above; have a 3.5 or above GPA; complete an
application form and 500-word (2-page) essay; and secure two letters of recommendation.
Within sixty days of return to the United States, Burton Fellows must complete
a 500-word (2-page) report detailing his or her activities while abroad, and
will be expected to assist in the recruitment of future Burton Fellows
following their study abroad experience.
