Meet One of our Spring 2013 Gilman Scholarship Recipients

1. What is your major?  Why did you choose this major?

I'm a Junior majoring in International Relations (International Security track) with a focus on Middle East Studies. My minor is Political Science and Arabic. I chose this major because I've always been interested in studying and working abroad as well as international security issues.

2. Where will you be going abroad, what will you be doing there and how will it impact your academics and life goals?

I will be going to Bahcesehir Univerisity in Istanbul, Turkey this Spring 2013 semester. I'll be taking all political science courses and one Arabic course. This will be my first study abroad experience and I believe it will have a tremendous impact on where I go and my job occupation. I picked my majors/minors and this location to go abroad because I am of Turkish heritage and wanted my first abroad experience to be more of a "heritage seeking" experience, as well as improve my speaking skills.

3.What is most exciting to you about going abroad?

The most exciting thing about my program is constantly hearing about how Istanbul is one of the top cities in the world to visit. It has culture, history, European and Asian influences, and a great night life! Istanbul is one of the only cities with both strong Western and Eastern influences that do not compete with each other, and instead, embrace each other.

4. What does earning this scholarship mean to you?

The application process was very simple and stress free, and if I had not been awarded this $5,000 scholarship I do not know if I could have even gone. My experience will be much better and I will be financially stress free!
